The Church and its Pointy Bit
Here is your latest update on the spire restoration – where we are and what is planned next.
As of Friday this week the last bit of scaffolding should be going up and other work has started. For those who have expressed comments and believe it to be a modern art sculpture, it is not, and it will not be kept. We have been advised that the delay in completing the scaffolding, mainly due to the weather, will not delay the completion date as Pinnacle have been doing work in the background. This week we will see:
- A new exterior water tap to be installed by rear vestry door.
- Cutting out of old mortar to start on lower spire while scaffolding is completed.
- Fabric screening to be installed on lower scaffold before cutting out. Banners to be fitted.
- This next stage – the cutting out – is the dirty stage so please be aware it will be messy.
To quash some comical rumours:
- They will not be removing the whole spire to carry out repairs; they will, however, be removing approximately the top two metres to enable the removal of the weather vane so it can be repaired and gilded; once this is done, it will be re-fitted along with the stonework.
- Do not panic if you see holes appearing as they are removing some of the damaged stones. Bit like Jenga
- Sadly, the money raising request for hard hat tours and Zip line is declined on insurance grounds.
- Finally, the offer of sponsorship to go up the scaffolding is declined as I don’t do heights and the gaps between stages are too small and we don’t want the church warden getting stuck and having to be rescued by the fire brigade.
