Thought for the week from Tim
“Don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. 23 For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. 24 You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. 25 But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.” James 1:22-25
When I was a teenager, one of the things that a group of us used to do on a Wednesday evening was meet up and play Monopoly. To start with, things did not go too well, because each of us thought that we knew the rules, or had our own family/house rules that we thought were in the rule book. This, as you can imagine, caused more than a little tension. So we decided that we would play by the real rules that were in the box and obey them. The next week, after we had all studied the rules, most of us were surprised that there were rules in the rule book that we did not even know about. When we learned the rules properly rather than relying on what we assumed, we all started to look forward and really enjoy our time together playing Monopoly. The key to our enjoyment was us all following the right rules and sticking to them.
In the same way, living a life away from our GOD given rule book will always lead to disaster. Not just reading it or studying it – that would be like just looking in a mirror and straight away forgetting what we look like – but living by it, letting it sink in and become part of our DNA.
Not only that, our passage says that God will bless you for doing this.
