Church Spire Restoration Update No. 4

As of Thursday 9th November, and a site meeting with the main contractors Pinnacle, Carl the church architect, and Ruth Buttery who was in attendance as part of the evaluation process for the NHLF, I am happy to report the following:

  • The spire part is now complete, all repairs and pointing is finished.
  • The tower has had all the raking out completed and pointing will be finished by 17/11/23.
  • The additional stonework for the tower has been delayed from the supplier but is due to arrive and be installed shortly.
  • The weathervane refurbishment is now complete, as is the new lightning conductor system.
  • The scaffolding will start being removed week commencing 13/11/23.
  • Internally, the raking out is almost complete, and repointing starts next week.
  • The planned date for the clock refurbishment has been moved to the end of November due to the stonework delay, but will still be completed in time.
  • A further payment has been made and a large payment is due towards the end of November.

During the meeting it was stated that a problem had been found in the internal work of the Tower, and also a metal ring beam. We were advised that over the years the inserts into the stonework had started to corrode, which was causing the stonework to corrode.  This needs to be rectified and cannot be left as it is.  Two solutions were offered, and we chose one based on the advice of the architect.

Next Major Milestones:

  • The first of the scaffolding to be removed,
  • Spire work to be signed off as complete.
  • Stone to arrive on site and be installed.
  • Refurbishment of the clock.
  • Completion Date 8th December
